Nyon is a hidden gem that's no longer hidden. This charming town on Lake Geneva combines Roman history with world-class festivals, wine culture with international flair. Julius Caesar founded Switzerland's first Roman colony here – today 250,000 people pilgrimage annually to the Paléo Festival.
«Colonia Iulia Equestris» was once home to Roman cavalry veterans. Today Nyon is home to UEFA, 130 nationalities and one of the liveliest cultural scenes in French-speaking Switzerland. The medieval château presides over the lake while life pulses below in the Rive quarter.
Nyon offers surprisingly much for its size:
Bars:
For big club nights: Geneva is just 13 train minutes away.
Nyon is a festival city par excellence:
Museums (one ticket for all):
Old Town (Upper Town): Around the château and Roman Museum. Winding lanes, boutiques and panoramic views of lake and Alps. The Caesar column by the lakeshore is here too.
Rive Quarter (Lower Town): The heart by the water. Yacht marina, fishermen's houses, cafés and galleries line the quay. Every last Sunday of the month, the quarter transforms into a huge flea market with 200+ vendors.
Castle Terrace: Free access to the city's best view – over Rive's rooftops, Lake Geneva, the French Alps to Mont Blanc and on clear days to Geneva's Jet d'eau.
Nyon is the perfect mix of cosmopolitan spirit and small-town charm. 40% of the population is international, UEFA has its headquarters here, yet people still know each other at the Fishermen's Pub. The La Côte vineyards deliver first-class Chasselas, Roman heritage is everywhere, and in July the city literally explodes at Paléo. Add the location: Lake Geneva at your doorstep, Jura at your back, Geneva in 13 minutes. What more could you want?
